Sunderland were beaten 4-2 by Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium in the Championship.

The Black Cats fell two goals down in the first half after Stuart Armstrong’s opener and an Adam Armstrong penalty. Sunderland managed to draw level after the interval, though, after goals from Romaine Mundle and Jobe Bellingham during a nine-minute spell.

Yet Southampton took the points after substitute Joe Rothwell scored twice from close range. Here's how the game played out:

How Southampton will start

What to make of those sides

So it's three changes for Sunderland following Tuesday’s match against Leicester.

Mason Burstow, Romaine Mundle and Abdoullah Ba are recalled to the starting XI, as Hemir Semedo and Pierre Ekwah drop to the bench, with Luke O’Nien suspended.

Teenage winger Harrison Jones, 19, is named on Sunderland’s bench for the first time.

Southampton have named an unchanged side following their 4-3 win over Birmingham last weekend.

Here come the players!

Ready to go...

Sunderland look like they are playing with a man-to-man marking system again.

The visitors had an early chance there after Burstow dispossessed Stephens but curled his low effort wide after cutting inside onto his right foot.

4' Wide from Smallbone

That was a decent chance for Smallbone on the edge of Sunderland's box, yet the midfielder sent his low shot just wide.

7' Bellingham in a deeper role

Bellingham has started in a deeper midfield position alongside Neil, with Rigg operating as the number 10.

Ba is on the left with Mundle on the right.

Seelt is shown the first yellow card of the match after pulling back Stuart Armstrong.

10' Goal Southampton (S. Armstrong)

Southampton lead.

Smallbone's free-kick was clipped into the box and Bellingham headed it back across his own goal.

Bednarek's header was saved by Patterson before Stuart Armstrong converted the rebound.

1-0.
