Ched Evans’ first half strike – which came via a controversial penalty – looked to have proved the difference at Highbury, only for Chris Maguire to level with a penalty of his own.

But Sunderland missed plenty of chances throughout the afternoon, and fans have been quick to question their wasteful nature and some of Phil Parkinson’s calls.

Here’s what supporters were saying on social media, with some still unhappy despite the dramatic draw:

@Jlamber55 added: “Hope Sammut or someone gets a chance in midfield rather than Dobson again, he's very poor. Our final third play needs to improve”

@Jam_Sarny commented: “Should the penalty have been given? Probably not. Does that make this performance acceptable? No. This is terrible”

@WalmsleySE9 tweeted: “Decent enough performance again today tbf but Maguire and ONien both guilty of missing from 6 yards out and we can not afford that”

@Ian_Crow3 said: “Poor ref, harsh to give pen for that tbh. Lacking an edge in the final third and that is hurting us. Can have as much possession as we want but it means nowt if we dont do owt with it.”

@StevePSAFC commented: “Normal service is resumed by #SAFC Ref gifted FT the penalty, 1 of the softest penalties I've seen given. Yes we've been the better team mainly because FT are terrible Gooch should have scored Maguire definitely should have scored”

@GAV1879 posted: “Our only tactic appears to be to work it wide and lump it into the box... so why have we got one striker on the pitch? It makes no sense. Parkinson is properly clueless.”
