The midfielder has signed a two-and-a-half year deal to join Aberdeen, where manager Derek McInnes has long been an admirer.

The Scottish side were interested in signing him this summer and McGeouch did consider leaving the club after a stop-start first season, but the 26-year-old opted to extend his contract for another year.

He has made just two appearances under new manager Phil Parkinson, however, and so has brought an early end to his time on Wearside.

“There’s been a lot of highs and lows in the last year, I’ve got some great memories, met some great people,” McGeouch said.

“The last few months have been frustrasting.

“It’s been a mad few days but I’m delighted to get everything sorted and get up here and I’m looking forward to the future.

“I want success at Aberdeen.

"The club has been up there over the last few years and we want to do that again; we want to be up there at the top of the table.

“Cup runs as well would be great and to bring a cup home would be key for the club as well and myself.

"I hope I can get back into the shop window for the Scotland squad.

“But for me the near future is just about playing games, enjoying my football again, hopefully doing well, bring success to the club and then if the international scene came back up, I would be happy with that as well.”

McGeouch will now travel to Dubai for a winter training camp with his new team-mates on Wednesday.

McInnes said the addition was a big boost to a squad struggling with injury.

“I’m delighted Dylan has joined us, he’s a player I’ve admired for a considerable period,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to getting him integrated as part of the squad. We’ve struggled with injuries in the midfield and bringing in a player of his ability will reinforce that area of the team and will benefit us greatly.”

McGeouch is the second Sunderland player to leave this window, with Laurens De Bock cutting short his loan spell from Leeds United.
