Foxes defender James Juston scored the only goal of the game when he headed home Kienan Dewsbury-Hall’s corner in the 12th minute.

Sunderland then had a strong penalty appeal turned down on the stroke of half-time when Dan Neil was brought down by Wout Faes.

Here’s how some Sunderland fans reacted on social media:

@finkel_218: Feel like we talk more about refs these days than actual performances

@Tony_young78: Dan Neil excellent tonight, Ballard excellent, Roberts just wouldn’t sit for him

@lord_barrold: Obviously it’s disappointing to lose (especially to another corner) but we put in a good performance away to the team that will walk the league this season. Three defeats on the spin but we are more than capable of beating Norwich on Saturday

@mackem49000: Great effort by the boys against a quality side. We can take heart and confidence from this performance

@thespiritof3 7: Boro - apology from PGMOL. Stoke - Handball for goal. Penalty on Clarke not given. Leicester - Clear penalty on Neil not given.

@grace_collinson: Sky sports saying the Sunderland players are you and needed to shout for the penalty yet two weeks ago, Dan Neil was sent off for doing just that…

@Padraigthe4th: Shame about the result, but all things considered that was a really competent performance. Looked the better side for large parts, we’re just lacking that presence up top.
