Sunderland played out a goalless draw against Coventry City at the CBS Arena - recording their first clean sheet of season.

The hosts saw more of the ball in the first half, with Sunderland defending in numbers to keep their opponents at bay.

Both sides found more space after the interval, yet neither could find a breakthrough.

Here’s how the game played out:

What to make of those sides

So it’s one change from the side which started against Rotherham last weekend with Abdoullah Ba coming in for the injured Patrick Roberts.

Elliot Embleton is back in the squad for the first time since December following his long-term injury setback, with Jenson Seelt also on the bench following his ankle issue.

Lynden Gooch isn’t named the squad with the full-back still managing a hamstring issue, while Jewison Bennette has a back problem. Both are expected to return to training next week.

Coventry have made two changes following their 1-1 draw at Swansea last weekend, with Ellis Simms and Kasey Palmer replacing Haji Wright and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto.

2’ How Sunderland have started

It looks like Sunderland have started with Bellingham up front with Dack playing as a No 10. Clarke is on the left and Ba on the right.

Neil has just had an early effort blocked from the edge of the Coventry box.

6’ Wide from Dack

Sunderland got into another decent position there after a run from Clarke down the left.

The winger’s cross was headed away by McFadzean, before Dack controlled the ball well on just inside the box before sending a low shot wide.

9’ Coventry pressure

Now Coventry are posing a threat.

Ballard’s headed clearance fell straight to van Ewijk there before Cirkin blocked the wing-back’s shot to concede a corner.

Bellingham then headed away a couple of corners at the front post.

14’ O’Nien booked

Now O’Nien is booked for stopping Godden when the Coventry striker was looking to latch onto a forward pass.

Coventry are seeing more of the ball now and starting to increase the speed of their passing.

17’ Dack and Bellingham almost combine

That was better from Sunderland as Dack played a neat lofted pass towards Bellingham in the Coventry box.

It was just out of the teenager’s reach.

20’ Important block by Cirkin

Sunderland are under pressure again after Sheaf played a well-weighted pass to Godden into the Sunderland box.

Cirkin was able to block the effort.
