The Black Cats blew the Imps away in a rampant first half and, while the second period proved a more nervy affair, fans were still left delighted with a fine performance and result.

Here’s what they had to say on social media after the game:

@Micky_A_Lawson said: “I hope this is the start of PP proven a lot of us wrong...... And I'm sure the lot of us want to be proven wrong”

@ChrisCrampsey added: “Can’t wait for Phil Parkinson to turn it all around and get us promoted”

@iandobbers joked: “The second goal was the most Sunderland thing I've ever seen. And for once, just once Sunderland didn't concede it.”

@SDAUK commented: “Gooch looking essential to this #safc team. While I i’m happy that he is making a difference, this very thought is worrying!”

@connormac_10 posted: “Think we can all agree McGeady hinders the teams overall performance. Good riddance”

@R1KNA tweeted: “Hope this is the start of me eating some humble pie”

@richardshaw86 added: “Amazing when you put a few results together. As things stand we’re 6 points off second with a game in hand (albeit Rotherham have a better goal difference). Couple of new recruits and 2nd half of the season becomes very interesting. Apologies if I’m being optimistic”

@harry_cook1 posted: “Different team out there today”

@safcftm2016 said: “Performances getting better...players look fitter...maguire looks like he lost spare tyre well one of them...no Mcgeady ...Hume killin it down left....in my opinion Mcgeady was the major problem ....totally to reliant on player who failed more than produced”

But @dan_h1993 argued: “Happy with that half of football... and yes I said football.. Parkinson in? No way. Couple of wins means nothing.. couple more and minds might be changed! Still time yet”

@AlexJaMills commented: “We play this football for the rest of the season, we will be fine”

@AMcGwinn tweeted: “Best football we've played in years. Long may it continue”

@HUGGYSAFC said: “This is the Sunderland we’ve been wanting man haway !!!!!”
