Kyle Lafferty has this encouraging response to questions over his Sunderland future

Lafferty penned a six-month deal at the Stadium of Light when he joined the club in January and impressed on his full debut as he netted a brace in the 2-2 draw with Gillingham.

And the striker is targeting an extended stay on Wearside, having admitted his pride at representing a ‘massive club’.

For now, though, the 32-year-old is keen to ensure he repays the faith shown in him by manager Parkinson – and knows only a stellar goal return will do that.

“I'd love to stay here,” said Lafferty, when quizzed on his future after the stalemate with the Gills.

“I said when I first joined here, if I was given the opportunity in my much younger years I would have came here.

“It's a massive club and to get the chance to play for this football club at 32 years of age, it's a nice feeling.

“The manager gave me a chance and the only way I can repay him is performances and goals. Hopefully today sends me in the right direction.”

Lafferty could face a battle to hold onto his place in the Sunderland side for this evening’s trip to Bristol Rovers (7:45pm kick-off) with Charlie Wyke potentially in-line for a return.

But the Northern Irish international is hopeful he will be afforded the opportunity to build on his stunning debut – and help fire Sunderland to a vital three points.

“Hopefully I've done enough to get the nod on Tuesday.

“Sometimes goals isn't enough, it's the overall play and bringing the team into play that is more important as well.

“Hopefully the manager sees I've done enough and I'll get the nod on Tuesday. If I get the nod, and hopefully I do, then I'll go out looking for goals.

“I feel confident of scoring in every game and I know in this team I'll get chances.”
