Exclusive:Kevin Phillips delivers verdict on where 'remarkable' Regis Le Bris ranks among Sunderland's greatest managers
Kevin Phillips has been speaking about Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris.
Sunderland icon Kevin Phillips has claimed that head coach Regis Le Bris “has to be up there” amongst the club’s best-ever managers following the Black Cats’ qualification for the Europa League last weekend.
The Frenchman has enjoyed a stellar tenure at the Stadium of Light since arriving in the summer of 2024, guiding his side to promotion from the Championship, comfortably avoiding relegation from the Premier League, and then, against all odds, ushering his squad to a spot on the continent next term.
And taking all of that into account during an exclusive interview with The Echo, courtesy of BestBettingSites, Phillips has argued that Le Bris may already be one of the best bosses Sunderland have ever had. He said: “He's up there, isn't he? What he's done...
“There have been some excellent managers for the football club over the years. I was lucky enough to work under Peter Reid for those two seventh-placed finishes, and it was a great time to work closely with people like that.

“But I think what Regis Le Bris has done, coming from a second league in France, where nobody knew who he was - it was a big gamble, a big chance. But not just that, coming into a style of football in this country that's completely different and getting them promoted, and then reshaping the whole squad and then going again in the Premier League and finishing seventh and in Europe. He has to be up there as one of the very best that Sunderland's ever had. He's done a remarkable job.”
