Kevin Phillips drops interesting transfer verdict on Dion Sanderson

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has delivered his verdict on Dion Sanderson’s chances of signing for the Black Cats.

The central defender, on loan from Wolves, cemented himself as one of Lee Johnson’s first defenders before suffering a season-ending injury and will miss the play-offs.

"He was a shining light for Sunderland prior to the injury. He has shown that he has great qualities. I’m sure he will be a top defender.

“I could tell straight away that he likes being at the club. When I did the EFL Trophy final he was up in the box and I could hear him shouting and getting behind the team.

“He clearly likes the club and feels comfortable in the North-East.

“If Sunderland were to go up and could afford him it sounds like he would be happy to sign. It is a very good sign for the club in regards to signing him this summer.”

However, some reports have suggested that 27-year-old defender is on the verge of a return to Aberdeen.

It has been stated that Robertson was meeting up with Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass this week or at the start of next week to discuss the move.

Indeed, Robertson’s contract is due to expire in the summer and he looks set to depart Championship club Rotherham United.
