Fleetwood, tipped as promotion contenders prior to the season, haven’t played since Boxing Day and have won just one of their last seven games in League One.

Their only triumph came against Swindon Town – with draws against Portsmouth, Crewe, Wigan and Sunderland, coupled with defeats to Northampton and Blackpool, seeing the side slip away from the promotion race.

A club statement read: “Fleetwood Town can confirm manager Joey Barton has left the club with immediate effect.

“We would like to thank Joey for his work during his time at Highbury Stadium and wish him success in the future.”

Sunderland were set to face Fleetwood Town this weekend, but the fixture has been postponed due to COVID-19 cases at Fleetwood. It will now be played on February 23.
