He has spent time on trial with the Blades in recent weeks, having unsuccessfully tried to win a deal with Italian giants AS Roma last year.

When quizzed on a deal for Rodwell, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said: “Yeah - we’re hoping to get that one over the line this morning.

“It’ll be a short team deal until the end of the season with the option of extending that”

And Wilder believes that a lot of the criticism levied at Rodwell during his time on Wearside was ‘nonsense’, hinting that the former Everton man was used as a scapegoat for former CEO Martin Bain.

“There is a lot of nonsense that has been talked about Jack,” he added.

“Maybe the spotlight shouldn’t be shone on Jack maybe it should be shone on a CEO at the time.

“I’ve sat down with Jack for quite a long time and spoke about his career going forward, it aligns with the club’s goals.”

The Blades hope that Rodwell will be available to feature in their FA Cup tie with AFC Fylde this weekend.
