After a goalless first half Ross Stewart scored twice after the interval following two crosses from Jack Clarke.
Clarke then got on the scoresheet after an excellent run and finish, before he was substituted to a standing ovation.
The result means Sunderland have taken 11 points from their first seven league games this season.
Our chief Sunderland writer Phil Smith has dished out his player ratings from the Stadium of Light:

5. Dennis Cirkin - 7
Picked up a silly yellow card early on but it had little impact on his performance. Defended really well under physical pressure and showed his power to break forward regularly. A strong performer, again. 7 Photo: Frank Reid

6. Dan Neil - 8
Another very accomplished performance. An excellent, clever assist for Jobe’s opener and got into good areas throughout the game. Barely gave it away throughout. 8 Photo: Frank Reid

7. Pierre Ekwah - 6
Is being asked to play a more disciplined role this season and still doesn’t quite look at his most influential. Tidied up well at times and played a part in the second goal with a good interception and then sharp pass. 6 Photo: Frank Reid

8. Jobe Bellingham - 8
Rewarded for being the player who got into those goalscoring positions, and the second in particular was a smart finish even if Johansson got a hand to it. Impressive performance, and only a strong block prevented him from landing a hat-trick. 8 Photo: Frank Reid
