'I'm not a fan': Ex-Sunderland favourite makes a blunt prediction over the Newcastle United Saudi takeover

The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, backed by Amanda Staveley and the Reuben Brothers, have agreed a deal to purchase the club from Mike Ashley – with Premier League checks currently ongoing.

And Sorensen believes that once a deal is sanctioned, they will set about finding a replacement for Bruce.

Speaking to Optus Sports’ GegenPod, he said: “I think we can agree that Steve Bruce is not the face of the richest club in the world.

“His style of play is probably not what they’re looking for, so when this goes through I’m sure they’ll be looking at someone with the right image, the right style and the right management of players.

“They’ll be looking to bring in big players so you need someone who can handle that and who has handled it in the past.

“It will be a very attractive job. I’m not a fan of Newcastle, but they have a great atmosphere and the fans just need a spark - then it will be a party atmosphere up there.”

His views were echoed by former Sunderland and Newcastle striker Michael Bridges, who has called for a manager with connections and kudos to be appointed to the St James’s Park hotseat.

Only then does he feel that the Magpies will be able to attract the big-name signings that the new ownership and fans will crave.

“I’m not taking anything away from Steve Bruce and his team as they have done an amazing job on a shoestring budget,” Bridges added.

“He was under pressure from day one after he came in after Rafa Benitez, he’s turned it around.

“But if you’re talking about the egos and connections you need to sign the big names Newcastle will want if this deal goes through, somebody with that kudos is going to be vital.

“That’s why I think a big manager will come in.”
