The teenager played the final half an hour of the clash at the Stadium of Light and was unlucky not to find himself on the scoresheet.

And Sunderland fans have backed the midfielder- who has been linked with Leeds United and Newcastle – to make a mark on the first-team squad.

On Twitter, @brettd1981 said: “Neil has impressed me, he should have had 2 goals but he has made some good runs to get in them positions”

Sunderland beat Carlisle United at the Stadium of Light

@RokerRookie posted: “Happy for Wyke to get his goals. Neil has been very good. Maguire, Gooch, Diamond, Grigg, Hume, Feeney, Scowen all did well. Still a lot of work to do but promising from Sunderland”@si_williamson added: “Dan Neil looks like he could be a useful player, made a few good runs from deep”

@britvikingsport commented: “This dan neil is quite good. Looks hungry and dangerous. “

@SpeakSAFC tweeted: “Honestly feel more impressed by Neil so far than any of the other younger players. Pops up everywhere and been incredibly unlucky not to score today. Another player that will have a big part to play”

@anthony_bulmer added: “Dan Neil looks tidy, might need a bit of finishing practise but could be a decent impact player this season”

@darksidemackem said: “Putting it out Dan Neil will be a super star. He looks the part. Get him in the match day squad. He’ll terrorise defenders next season. Pace power and skill”

@KieWetherall_ commented: “The main positives I took from that game were Maguire, Neil, Wyke, Scowen, Hume and Dobson. The score doesn't really reflect the match too much as I though we were quite poor until the subs came on. Once the changes were made we looked much better and controlled the game”

@hulkcass10 posted: “enjoyed watching the lads 2nd team where def more up for it but a mix from both will have us a good team special mention for Neil looked very good and big Charlie finished off his two chances very well Maguire , oinien looked sharpe and leadbitter looked well in centre”
