Kyril Louis-Dreyfus was in attendance as Sunderland lost to Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night.

The 23-year-old has agreed a deal to purchase a majority stake in the club from Stewart Donald, with the agreement confirmed on Christmas Eve.

Paperwork was forwarded to the EFL from that point and Louis-Dreyfus – who is thought to be worth around £2billion and will be appointed chairman if the deal is sanctioned – is now awaiting the green light from the league before the ownership change can be sanctioned.

Replying to a fan’s question's on Twitter, Armstrong said: “Hi Keith heard it would be done this week, but we are living in a Stewart Donald world, so nothing would surprise me yet.”

And asked about Louis-Dreyfus' appearance on Tuesday night, Armstrong added: "Yeh I think him being at the game does say a lot and he was sat next to K Speakman, which I think says a lot also. Fingers crossed it gets done soon.”

Sunderland legend Armstrong has previously spoken candidly about past involvements with groups who were looking to buy the club from Ellis Short.

Armstrong, when asked in 2018 about his involvement with a consortium and their attempts to purchase Sunderland, said: “I have been involved with one or two of the consortiums that has been involved in trying to buy it, it’s never came off.

"But yeah, I’ve been involved before, i.e. with the German consortium and other bits.

“They had a meeting with Mr Short and they couldn’t find an agreement, basically, so that’s where that ended up.”
