'Properly frustrated' – Granit Xhaka sends Instagram message to Sunderland fans following Wolves draw

Granit Xhaka reacts after 10-man Sunderland held by Wolves as Ballard faces ban and European hopes take hit

Granit Xhaka admitted his frustration after Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolves, but insisted the focus remains on finishing the season strongly.

Sunderland had taken the lead through Nordi Mukiele and were in control before Dan Ballard was sent off midway through the first half. From that point, Régis Le Bris’ side were forced to defend for long periods, with Wolves eventually levelling from a corner - the latest in a run of goals conceded from set-pieces.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Sunderland remained organised and disciplined, with Xhaka among those to push forward late on in search of a winner. There were positives in the performance, particularly in terms of application, but the failure to see the game out and continued vulnerability from set-pieces will frustrate.

Xhaka reflected on the result in a post on Instagram shortly after the final whistle at Molineux. “Properly frustrated after that one. Still nine points to play for, so let’s finish the season strong,” he wrote.

The draw leaves Sunderland 12th in the Premier League, four points adrift of the European places with three games remaining. Manchester United visit the Stadium of Light next Saturday (15:00), before Sunderland travel to Everton on Sunday, May 17 (15:00), ahead of a final-day meeting with Chelsea.

Sunderland will be without Northern Ireland international and defensive stalwart Ballard for that run, with the defender set to serve a three-match suspension for violent conduct, ending his stellar season following the red card against Wolves.
