Gillingham boss Steve Evans: We dominated Sunderland and it was the right call to rule out Charlie Wyke goal

Defender Connor Ogilvie scored an 89th-minute winner following a goalmouth scramble from a corner to condemn Sunderland to another defeat on the road.

Reflecting on the win, Gillingham boss Evans said: “We deserved to win the game.

“I thought we dominated the play.

“Our instructions to the players at half-time was that we might have to go to the very end. We were facing a team fighting for themselves, fighting for the club, the fans, their own contracts.

“We missed a couple of opportunities across the box and things but the minute if fell to Connor I thought he could score."

It could all have been so different had sub Wyke's close-range header stood but it was ruled out after a discussion between the officials.

Phil Parkinson said he was initially told it was for an offside but Evans suggested it was ruled out for a clear foul in the build-up.

Evans told Kent Online: “Their goal was a clear foul on Jack Bonham, I didn’t see it at the time, I thought they had scored, but the fourth official immediately turned to me and said ‘no goal’, while Sunderland players and staff were still celebrating.

“‘No goal, clear foul,’ the assistant referee said it three times to the referee, next thing I look the referee is going over to the assistant so I knew it wasn’t a goal.”
