Dobson was shown red in the opening day draw with Bristol Rovers and has since missed the last three League One games, with Grant Leadbitter coming into the side and cementing his place as one of the first names on Phil Parkinson’s team sheet.

Dobson will have the chance to stake his claim in the EFL Trophy game at home to Carlisle United at the Stadium of Light tonight (KO 7pm).

“It’s been a long three weeks out – obviously it’s not the way you want to start the season on a personal note, but I’m delighted to be back.

“The boys have done well, picking up eight points so far in the league, and there will be a lot of competition for places – it’s good as it helps us all to kick on and perform better.

“It’s important we get that win to keep our momentum and spirits up before the international break.

“Apart from losing on penalties [against Hull] we’ve been unbeaten this season.

"If we can continue that for as long as possible it can only breed more confidence.

“Not conceding many goals has been a great foundation for us so far, so if we can build on that then we can take it into the rest period before a hectic start with the Swindon game.”

Sunderland beat Aston Villa Under-21s 8-1 in the opening group game of the EFL Trophy.

Dobson is confident Sunderland can enjoy another long run in the competition having reached the final two years ago.

“We started well, and hopefully we can build on that first game so we can progress in the competition,” he told the club website.

“At the end of your career, if you can say you’ve won a trophy and played at Wembley, that’s what you dream of growing up.

“For whichever team the gaffer picks, everyone will be well up for it and hopefully we can get another win in the group.”
