Further positive Covid-19 cases at Sunderland AFC

Earlier this week the club took the decision to postpone the next three League One fixtures and close the Academy of Light training ground after a total of five positive cases.

Sunderland won't play over Christmas as a result and the next game is not until Accrington Stanley away on December 29.

The Echo understands there has since been further positive tests at the club, though an exact figure is not known.

The club won't be providing a running commentary as it battles the Covid-19 outbreak but speaking earlier this week CEO Jim Rodwell said it was the 'responsible decision' to close the Academy of Light for the next 10 days.

As revealed by the Echo, Sunderland’s entire first team squad has been told to isolate and warned they must adhere to strict guidelines.

A meeting was held with the squad via Zoom on Thursday urging them to follow isolation regulations to the letter and reminding them of their responsibilities.

Speaking on Wednesday after it was confirmed the training ground was to close and three matches postponed, Rodwell said: "It is with a heavy heart that I have informed the EFL that we are unable to play our next three league fixtures.

"The welfare of our players, staff and opponents remains the number one priority and following detailed conversations with the relevant authorities, we have also taken the responsible decision to close the Academy of Light for a 10-day period.

"On behalf of everyone at the club, I wish all of those affected a swift and complete recovery.”
