The Black Cats, then managed by Paolo Di Canio, defeated Alan Pardew’s Magpies on Tyneside in the Premier League by three goals to hand Sunderland’s survival hopes a huge boost.
The imagery of Di Canio’s celebrations and knee slide during and after Sunderland’s win remains iconic on Wearside even now, 11 years after the match between the two North East rivals took place.

5. Danny Rose
Following his stint at Sunderland, Danny Rose returned to his parent club, Tottenham Hotspur, where he became a mainstay in the starting lineup. Rose's performances earned him recognition at both the domestic and international levels, representing England in major tournaments including the FIFA World Cup. His contributions to Tottenham's success were highlighted by his role in the team's memorable UEFA Champions League campaign, where they reached the final in 2019. In 2021, Rose made a move to Newcastle United, where he continued to ply his trade in the Premier League. Despite being just 33 years old, Rose hasn't played since leaving Watford in 2022. 6. Alfred N'Diaye
Following his time at Sunderland, Alfred N'Diaye embarked on a journey that took him to various clubs across Europe and continued to ply his trade at clubs in France, Spain, and Turkey. N'Diaye represented Senegal at the international level, featuring in tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations. N'Diaye now plays for FC Noah in Armenia. Photo: AFP
7. Seb Larsson
After leaving Sunderland, Seb Larsson continued his football journey with several clubs. Larsson made the move to Hull City in the Championship, where he played a key role in the team's midfield. Larsson, though, returned home to join AIK Fotboll in Sweden. In addition to his club career, Larsson represented the Swedish national team, participating in major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. 8. James McLean
Following his time at Sunderland, James McClean continued his professional career with various clubs. McClean played in the Premier League for West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City, later joining Wigan Athletic in the EFL. Beyond his club career, McClean represented the Republic of Ireland national team, featuring prominently in their campaigns for both the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup. McClean is now at Wrexham under former Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson. The Welsh side have just won promotion to League One. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
