The former Sunderland attacker recently joined North East rivals Middlesbrough on a short team deal until January and scored twice as Boro won against Swansea last week.
The 26-year-old was previously a free agent after he was released by Sunderland in the summer and was close to signing for Indian Super League club East Bengal before learning about Neil Warnock’s interest.

Hide AdWatmore spent six injury-hit seasons on Wearside between 2013 and 2019 before departing the club.


The 12-time England under-21 youth international still holds the area in high-regard after he and his father donated £500 to the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen Fundraiser’s GoFundMe page.
Ian Watmore, a former FA chief executive, explained their decision to donate.
"This is a brilliant initiative. Duncan visited last year and was v impressed by everyone as well as deeply affected by the scale of the challenge.

The appeal, set up by Roker Report, is raising funds for Wearsiders struggling at Christmas time and has already raised over £1500.
“This Christmas, we are asking the Roker Report community to raise funds for Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen,” the fansite explained.
“You can be certain that your donation, no matter how large or small, will be put to good use to provide help for local people who are in need of it.
