Grigg had enjoyed a positive performance at the Stadium of Light but Phil Parkinson’s side were made to pay after missing several good chances.

The game ended goalless and went straight to penalties in the behind-closed-doors clash. Here’s the best of the SAFC fan reaction.

Sunderland had dominated the first half and created the best chances over the course of the game but they have been knocked out at the first hurdle. The League One season starts next Saturday.

@Philip_RJ89 added: “We should’ve won that game comfortably, and we MUST develop a ruthlessness in front of goal. Good performances from O’Brien and Grigg (penalty miss aside). The cup might not have been a priority, but a win would’ve given us a big boost. 100% focus on the league now.”

@irobarmstrong Robert Armstrong added: “Dominated the game, multiple opportunities to score, two disallowed, looked really sharp, still lost. Plenty to be positive about but the lack of a clinical edge when it matters will deny us promotion. #SAFC”

And finally, John Phillips @redjohn3 added: “Inevitable. A game we dominated and Hull were never in it. A good thing to get out the way. A lesson for other L1 teams on where to put their penalties against us.”
