Exclusive: Leo Pearlman of Fulwell73 teases season three of Netflix hit Sunderland 'Til I Die

The Fulwell73 partner, who has acted as executive producer on both instalments of the Netflix docu-series, was speaking exclusively to the Echo ahead of the release of season two of Sunderland ‘Til I Die.

And when quizzed on the potential for a third series of the popular show, Pearlman failed to rule-out the cameras returning to Wearside in the future.

The 2019/20 campaign has not been filmed by the Netflix cameras, but Fulwell73 certainly aren’t closing the door on a franchise which has attracted worldwide acclaim.

"Never say never,” said Pearlman.

"I don't think it felt like a third season at this stage, I don't think it felt right. Maybe if there had been promotion, who knows?

"I would love to conclude this with a third series where there was some real positivity, but I don't think there will ever be a Sunderland season where it's all just sereneness and light.

“There's always going to be worries and down times, but something that ends on a high note would be pretty special."

Season two of Sunderland ‘Til I Die will hit the streaming service on April 1, and will focus largely on the attempts of Charlie Methven and Stewart Donald to turn around the club’s fortunes both and on and off the pitch.

Indeed, the ownership duo feature prominently throughout – but how did they react to how they were portrayed on the show?

"Nobody likes seeing themselves on camera, and especially for such a lengthy amount of time,” said Pearlman.

"I think it would be incredibly hard to find someone who watches back six hours of content that focus in some degree on them and not find it slightly uncomfortable.

"I think the most important this is, and I asked them this at the start and at the end, is do you think we captured your character?

"Thankfully, both of them felt that way about the show so I think we did our job in that respect."

"They got to see it before as a courtesy,” he continued.

"They've been open, honest and transparent with us and there's a lot of trust involved so we always said they would get a chance to see it before it was aired.

"I don't want them feeling hijacked or ambushed by any scenes. They both saw it in all its glory a couple of weeks ago."

Season Two of ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’ will be released on Netflix on April 1.
