Exactly what happened and who impressed as Sunderland draw at promotion rivals Peterborough United

Sunderland AFC face a key game in the League One promotion race as they face Peterborough United this afternoon.

Tuesday, 6th April 2021, 8:01 am

The Black Cats are on the brink of the top two after an 11-game unbeaten run in the league, and will move into the automatic promotion places for the first time since April 2019 if they can seal victory at London Road.

But standing in their way are a Peterborough side who themselves have their sights set on the top two and who have top scorer Jonson Clarke-Harris in their ranks.

It promises to be an intriguing afternoon, and Lee Johnson will have to decide whether to stick or twist from the side that beat Oxford United on Friday. Denver Hume and Aiden O’Brien will be pushing for starts, while Jordan Jones could again feature.

How are the nerves, then?

There’s nop hiding from the fact it’s a big day for Sunderland and their League One promotion hopes as they head to Peterborough United.

The Black Cats are unbeaten in their last 11 league outings and travel to a Posh side currently sat in second.

While it’s not quite make or break, there will be plenty of eyes on this game today - and you can follow it all right here.

So, let’s get cracking shall we?

Here’s how things look in League One ahead of kick-off...

Sunderland will climb into the top two with victory today, and could even be top at the end of the evening if results go their way!

  • AFC Wimbledon v Fleetwood Town
  • Blackpool v Gillingham
  • Bristol Rovers v Doncaster Rovers
  • Burton Albion v Swindon Town
  • Hull City v Northampton Town

Lee Johnson has spoken ahead of the game

The Sunderland head coach has offered his take on the clash - and the state of the London Road pitch.

Of course, if you win the game then it gives you a nudge up.

That’s why we’ve got to keep taking our lessons from each game and we can’t have that 15-20 minute spell we had in the first half here again at Peterborough because they will capitalise on that.

You’ll have seen the Peterborough pitch, it’s almost like tumbleweed in that it gets quicker when you pass the ball.

Peterborough play that pitch really well. They’ve got good footballers who almost volley it to each other, so that will be a consideration when I select the team

Lee Johnson

Will we see Denver Hume for Sunderland today?

The full-back wasn’t part of the Sunderland squad to face Oxford United on Friday, but did warm-up with the teams as he steps-up his return.

Hume has got some game minutes under his belt with the under-23 side and Johnson will have to decide whether today is the day to reintroduce him to the first-team fold.

What are the odds for Peterborough United v Sunderland?

The bookmakers have this as a close-run thing!

SkyBet have odds of 17/10 for Peterborough United to win, while Sunderland can be backed at 6/4. The draw is 11/5.

And for once, Charlie Wyke isn’t the favourite to open the scoring!

Jonson Clarke-Harris is 16/5 to net first.

(all odds correct as of 9am on Monday, April 5)

Darren Ferguson is also playing down today’s game

The Peterborough boss says it isn’t a fixture that will define their season.

We can now look forward to a big game on Monday against Sunderland, live on the TV at home. It is just a shame there won’t be any fans to see it in the stadium.

That game won’t define our season as there will still be a lot of points to play for.

It is a big win for us. The goal came late and that can often be the best time to score as there is no time for the opponent to come back at us.

Darren Ferguson

The latest team news from both Sunderland and Peterborough

Here’s how the two teams are shaping-up ahead of the game...

Sunderland will select from the same pool of players that faced Oxford United.

The game will come too soon for Bailey Wright and Tom Flanagan, while Arbenit Xhemajli and Jordan Willis are longer-term absentees.

Denver Hume and Jordan Jones could come back into contention, while Aiden O’Brien could also return to the line-up.

The Posh also have no fresh injury concerns after their win at Fleetwood Town last week.

Siriki Dembele and Jack Taylor were substitutes in that clash and could return to the fold against the Black Cats, but the game is likely to come too soon for young defender Ronnie Edwards.

How can I watch Peterborough United v Sunderland? Is it on TV?

Peterborough United v Sunderland will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Football.

You can also stream the game via NowTV, but SAFSee and iFollow coverage will not be available in the UK.

Is this the Sunderland team that will start today?

The Sunderland team that could start against Peterborough - with TWO key changes

Sunderland travel to Peterborough United on Monday afternoon looking to take a major step towards promotion – but what team will Lee Johnson name?

Some positive news on Jordan Jones!

Jordan Jones is keen to join Sunderland permanently this summer after impressing on loan from Rangers

That’s according to a report this morning by Football Insider.

The Northern Ireland international joined Sunderland on loan from Rangers in January and has impressed in red and white so far this season.

The attacker scored a rocket in the 2-2 draw against Crewe and played vital roles in Sunderland’s wins over Portsmouth and Oxford United.

A ‘recruitment source’ is said to have told Football Insider that Jones would like to secure a full-time at the Stadium of Light when his loan expires.

Rangers will not stand in Jones’ way of an exit if their asking price of around £600,000 is met.

The Sunderland squad are here!

And as expected, Lee Johnson is selecting from the same sauad that was available against Oxford United on Friday.

And here’s how Sunderland line-up this afternoon: Burge; Power, O’Nien, Sanderson, McFadzean; McGeady, Winchetser, Leadbitter, Jones; Stewart, Wyke

And on the bench: Matthews, McLaughlin, O’Brien, Gooch, Scowen, Diamond, Hume

That’s three changes from the win over Oxford as Leadbitter, Winchester and Stewart come into the side. Denver Hume, meanwhile, returns on the bench.

It looks like a 4-4-2 for the Black Cats with Wyke and Stewart - who makes his first start - up top.

Here’s how Peterborough line-up...

No real surprises from them - although key man Jack Taylor returns in midfield.

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is in town!

Sunderland are out to warm-up

And while the pitch may have the sun beaming down upon it, don’t be fooled - it’s still freezing cold!
