Tuesday, 20th April 2021, 10:26 pm

The Black Cats have lost out to Charlton Athletic, Wigan Athletic and Blackpool in their last three outings – with their automatic promotion hopes all-but over as a result.

But with the play-offs on the horizon, Lee Johnson is determined to see his team build-up some form of momentum ahead of the always unpredictable end of season lottery.

That could see the Sunderland boss make some changes to his side as they head to Hull City, with the Tigers potentially just one win away from sealing automatic promotion if other results go their way tonight.

Hull City are full of respect for Sunderland ahead of tonight’s clash

Hull boss Grant McCann says his side must respect Sunderland this evening - despite the Black Cats’ recent results.

It’s going to be another very tough game, Sunderland are not up where they are in the league for no reason. They’re up there because they’re a very good team and they’ve got some very good players, so we’re going to have to be at it to get another result. They’ll come here knowing they’ll have to win the game which in turn will open it up to be a good game of football, because they play good football. They’ve got good players at the top end of the pitch who can hurt you if you’re not right.

Max Power says Sunderland will be doing everything to avoid giving Hull City a promotion boost this evening.

The Black Cats head to Humberside looking to end their three-game winless run in League One – where they will meet a side who can all-but seal promotion with victory.

And while the Tigers may be preparing for a promotion party at the KCOM Stadium, Power is determined to see his side go and secure a much-needed result ahead of what looks set to be another play-off campaign.

When quizzed on Maguire last week, Lee Johnson said: “There’s no frustrations with him or anything like that.

The latest team news from Sunderland and Hull City ahead of tonight’s game...

Here’s how both squads are shaping-up:

The Black Cats are likely to select from the same squad that was available for the game at Blackpool on Saturday.

Tom Flanagan, Jordan Willis, Conor McLaughlin and Arbenit Xhemajli all remain sidelined, while Dion Sanderson is unlikely to feature as Sunderland continue to monitor a back problem.

That means that Bailey Wright and Luke O’Nien are set to continue at the heart of the defence, while Oliver Younger could again travel with the side as defensive cover.

Sunderland have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the game.

The Tigers are sweating on the fitness of former Sunderland midfielder George Honeyman, who missed the weekend win over Fleetwood.

He could be set to make his return tonight, while Richie Smallwood and Reece Burke could also be involved.
