Time is running out however for any new boss to be in the dugout ahead of Saturday’s game.

For Power, the focus is on getting back to winning ways.

He said: “We have to look at Wigan at home next up. It’s a shame what has happened to them in the past few months.

“They shouldn’t be in this division and it’s no fault of the players – obviously off-field issues hampered them last season – but for me, I’m a Sunderland player, I’ve got good memories at Wigan, but for me now it’s all about this football club.

“We want the three points at the weekend,” he told the club website.

Sunderland are without a win in all competitions in six matches now, the 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town the last game of Parkinson’s spell in charge on Wearside.
