Ex-Sunderland star hits back at claims fans are 'toxic' in response which has thrilled supporters

Former winger Andy Reid insists the Sunderland fanbase is far from toxic and has hailed supporters as some of the ‘best and most loyal fans in the world’.

The Stadium of Light faithful have previously come in for criticism from co-owner Charlie Methven after they vented their frustration at his and Stewart Donald’s stewardship on Wearside, as well as the duo’s continued inability to sell the club.

In turn, there has been a growing feeling of unrest among fans, with a mounting desire to see the club change hands as soon as possible.

Donald and Methven’s cause has also been hindered by a third consecutive season in League One.

But Reid, who played for the Black Cats between 2008 and 2011, believes that Sunderland supporters are among the best in the world.

When responding to a question from a fan on Twitter, the former Republic of Ireland international said: “Toxic? Not a chance, some of the best and most loyal fans in the world, they will put up with almost anything as long as you give 100% for the club!”

A number of Sunderland fans were delighted by his response too.
