Colback is in the final year of his deal at St James’s Park and looks to have no future with the club after he was omitted from Steve Bruce’s 25-man Premier League squad.

And with Bruce keen to trim the wage bill ahead of the January transfer window, the departure of the 30-year-old seems a logical option.

Indeed, the Telegraph state that Colback and fellow outcast Henri Saivet – who was also excluded from the Premier League squad – could both be moved out the door during the winter trading period.

The report states that Newcastle “could terminate their contracts early in a private financial settlement”, although this is understood to be a difficult route to take.

Colback spent last season on loan with Nottingham Forest and was linked with a permanent switch to the City Ground over the summer.

Meanwhile, Sunderand winger Aiden McGeady has praised the man management abilities of Neil Lennon – whom he played under at Celtic.

"Lenny obviously was a top player and had a lot of different views on football, but to say he was going to be a manager was difficult,” he told BT Sport.

"I think one of Lenny's biggest positives was his man management - especially with me when he took over.

"A lot of other players that have played under him have said the same thing. He knows how to get the best out of his players."
