Ex-Sunderland defender set to join League One rivals and bolster their promotion push

Former Sunderland defender Adam Matthews is set to re-join Charlton Athletic, according to reports.

Matthews spent last season at the Valley, but departed the club in the summer after failing to agree a contract – with takeover uncertainty making it difficult for the Addicks to tie-down players while a contract embargo restricted how much could be offered to potential signings.

But with the club’s ownership situation now resolved, manager Lee Bowyer is set to swoop to bring the former Celtic man back to Charlton.

The 28-year-old had spent time training with the Addicks over the summer, and the South London Press now claim that he will sign a new deal with the club today.

His addition will further bolster a squad which is quickly climbing the table.

Charlton have won their last three League One outings and are just one place and point behind Sunderland – having also played seven games.
