McGeady was spotted in the crowd at Hibernian’s 4-2 Scottish Cup win over Dundee United but Ross said he had no idea he was there and isn’t looking to take him back to Scotland.

McGeady is not part of Phil Parkinson’s Sunderland plans.

When asked about McGeady’s visit to the game, Ross told the Scottish press: “I didn’t know he was here.

“He never asked me for a ticket so he must have other contacts!

‘We’ll try to prioritise other positions but he’s a player who was very productive for me. It was nice of him to come along.

“Nice of him to drop me a message, as well!”

Meanwhile, another Sunderland player who faces an uncertain future is Marc McNulty, the on loan Reading striker.

Ross has been linked with the striker several times and he didn’t close the door on a possible move for the forward before the deadline.

However, for that to happen both Sunderland and Reading would have to agree to cancel the loan deal and the Black Cats would want a replacement lined up.

On McNulty, Ross added: “I obviously signed him this season already and he’s not playing regularly.

“However he’s another club’s player. I wouldn’t comment too much.

“I think he’s a good player.”

Sunderland travel to Tranmere Rovers tonight for a League One clash.
