Watmore, 26, is a free agent after he was released by the Black Cats in the summer and has been training with Boro for the last two weeks.

Warnock wants to sign another forward after Ashley Fletcher suffered a lengthy hamstring injury which will keep him sidelined until next year.

The Boro boss has been impressed with Watmore over the last fortnight but says there are other factors to consider.

"At the moment I’m not prepared to sign anybody because of the circumstances but Duncan is aware of that and is aware of how much I’m enjoying him training,” said Warnock ahead of Saturday’s trip to Blackburn.

"It’s not just down to him and I’m hoping we can come to an agreement sooner rather than later but at the moment it’s not possible.”

After their game against Blackburn, Boro will travel to Brentford on Saturday before the international break.

Warnock hopes the situation will be clearer by then but does admit Watmore may have other offers on the table.

“I’ll speak to him this week. I think he’ll have other offers on the table which he’ll have to consider,” Warnock added.

When asked if Watmore is the type of player Boro are looking for, Warnock replied: “He’s different and available, training hard.

“We would probably do it until January just in case. It’s hard for these lads to play up front on their own at times.”
