The Black Cats won 2-1 at Oxford last time out after Elliot Embleton came off the bench to score a dramatic winner.

Embleton’s goal moved Sunderland back into the play-off places, yet the margin for error remains slim as we reach the final stretch.

Alex Neil held his pre-match press conference this morning ahead of the Shrewsbury game.

RECAP: Alex Neil press conference

Key Events

  • Sunderland face Shrewsbury Town at the Stadium of Light on Friday (3pm kick-off).
  • Black Cats boss Alex Neil will held his pre-match press conference earlier today.
  • Sunderland beat Oxford 2-1 last time out and have five league games remaining.

On the injury front, playmaker Alex Pritchard missed last weekend’s trip to Oxford with a calf injury.

The issue isn’t thought to be serious and the attacker could return against Shrewsbury.

Neil said after the game: “He trained earlier this week and he just said to me, ‘there’s something not quite right.

“We got it scanned and there’s a lateral issue there, but there’s not a big problem. I’m really hopeful that he’ll be involved for the next game, he just wasn’t quite ready.

“I’ve worked with Al before so when he tells you something is not quite right, it’s not.”

We’ll get a further injury update when Neil speaks to the press this morning.

Ross Stewart reports

We’ll start with the latest reports concerning Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

It’s no surprise that several clubs are tracking the Scottish frontman, with Rangers the latest team to be linked with a summer swoop.

Norwich and Swansea are also said to be tracking the Sunderland top scorer, who was recently called into the Scotland squad.

Stewart has a year left on his Sunderland contract, while the club hold an additional one-year option to extend the deal until the summer of 2024.
