Ross Stewart scored the game’s only goal at the Stadium of Light when he capitalised on Sam Hutchinson’s mistake on the stroke of half time.
Sunderland had chances to double their lead in the second half as Alex Pritchard hit the crossbar.
The hosts were also forced to defend their advantage in the closing stages but held onto their clean sheet.
Our chief SAFC writer Phil Smith has delivered his verdict on how each Black Cats player fared at the Stadium of Light:
9. Alex Pritchard - 7
So unlucky not to make it 2-0 early in the second half with a stunning effort that beat Peacock-Farrell before striking the bar. Plenty of energy and lively on the ball before understandably tiring. 7 Photo: JPI Media
10. Patrick Roberts - 6
Didn’t get much space in the first half but looked a threat when he did and almost scored the goal of the season in the second half when he drove from deep to see an effort deflected just over. 6 Photo: FRANK REID PHOTOGRAPHER 2022
11. Ross Stewart - 7
Brilliant individual play for the opener, staying alert and pouncing on Hutchinson’s error. Ran the channel superbly throughout in a tense game, and nearly nicked a second late on. 7 Photo: JPI Media
12. Elliot Embleton (sub) - 6
Not much chance to make an impact as the visitors penned Sunderland in late on. 6 Photo: JPI Media
