The former Bristol City boss reintroduced forgotten man Aiden McGeady to his starting XI at the Stadium of Light, but the Black Cats were ultimately undone by an early strike from teenage Latics striker Kyle Joseph.

Johnson's side created a host of opportunities, but were unable to capitalise on any of them, while their visitors snatched all three points with their only effort on Lee Burge’s goal.

The result leaves the Wearsiders ninth in the table, 10 points behind league leaders Hull City and four points off the play-off places.

Despite the win, Wigan remain bottom of the pile in League One, four points off safety.
