And here’s what they were saying on social media:

On Twitter, @tenchylad said: “Great attitude he has shown and wants to stay for the right reasons and players like him who have that attitude should be retained. Not just from a footballing perspective but a culture change perspective.”

Former Black Cat @SleevesElliott added: “JM was immense last season and should’ve been given new deal especially considering the form of last few GKs that #safc had previously. Probably tried to sell him hence bringing Burge in. Didn’t understand that one as that was 1 part of team that was fine.”

@markbol1972 posted: “Just shows that parkinson has no say what so ever at this club.far to many player out of contract in the summer.its a shambles.”

@harryfootyin argued: “Probably because the club was in discussions with different parties regarding a takeover, contracts rarely happen during this process, since then his form has been patchy and the manager changed, its not a huge surprise”On Facebook, Paul J Robson commented: “He had a bad spell, like most keepers do, but seems to be getting back on track. Was our best player last season by a mile.”

Neil Routledge said: “Think with Ben Alnwick training with lads and burge more than capable. I reckon they will sell him”

But Billy McKillion replied: “If it's a choice between jonny mac and Ben Alnwick we keep jonny mac.....Alnwick had more clubs than tiger woods and there's obvious reasons for that”Linda Copeland posted: “He wants to stay come on Donald offer new contract. This has been on going since August last year. What's wrong within the club something is not Right at the club. That's my opinion.”
