Club statement as ex-Sunderland star Aiden McGeady departs Ayr United

Former Sunderland star Aiden McGeady has left Ayr United, it has been revealed.

McGeady joined the club last summer in a dual player and technical manager role. He played 16 times for Ayr last season with two goals in the Championship, but the veteran is now on the move.

Ayr United posted on X: “Ayr United Football Club can confirm that Aiden McGeady has left the club by mutual agreement. The club would like to thank Aiden for his contribution since joining in July 2023 and wish him the best for his future.”

The former Republic of Ireland attacker joined Ayr United on a free transfer in 2023 after leaving Hibernian at the end of the season prior. After five years on Wearside, which included a brief loan spell at Charlton Athletic in 2020, McGeady linked up with former Black Cats boss Lee Johnson at Hibs during the 2022-23 season but made just 14 appearances for the Easter Road outfit.

However, the 37-year-old joined Ayr United last summer, linking up with former Sunderland teammate Chris Maguire. McGeady, who was once bought by Spartak Moscow from Celtic for a whopping £9.5million, signed a two-year contract and also took the role of technical manager.
