Chris Maguire played 75 minutes for the Black Cats as he looked to maintain match fitness, and pressed his senior claims with a first-half assist for Josh Hawkes.
That goal continued Hawkes' superb form this season, the former Hartlepool United forward now boasting a tally of nine from sixteen appearances.

Hide AdAnthony Patterson had kept the scores level in the opening minutes with a fine penalty save, but was beaten from another spot kick early in the second half by Taylor Gardner-Hickman.
The West Brom youngster doubled his tally shortly afterwards, before a Sunderland trialist levelled.
Toby King scored the winger as the game headed into the final quarter, with Hawkes denied a second late on.
Bailey Wright did not feature in the game, and could therefore be in contention to face Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night.
