Chris Maguire features as Sunderland U23s fall to narrow defeat against West Brom

Chris Maguire played 75 minutes for the Black Cats as he looked to maintain match fitness, and pressed his senior claims with a first-half assist for Josh Hawkes.

That goal continued Hawkes' superb form this season, the former Hartlepool United forward now boasting a tally of nine from sixteen appearances.

Anthony Patterson had kept the scores level in the opening minutes with a fine penalty save, but was beaten from another spot kick early in the second half by Taylor Gardner-Hickman.

The West Brom youngster doubled his tally shortly afterwards, before a Sunderland trialist levelled.

Toby King scored the winger as the game headed into the final quarter, with Hawkes denied a second late on.

Bailey Wright did not feature in the game, and could therefore be in contention to face Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night.
