Steve Bruce enjoyed his finest day as Black Cats boss when Sunderland earned an unforgettable victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
From Nedum Onuoha’s slalom run to Asamoah Gyan and Boudewijn Zenden’s dancing, Sunderland’ 3-0 win over the Blues is one that will live long in the memory.
Not many gave the Wearsiders a chance at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea were yet to concede a goal heading into the game with Carlo Ancelotti’s men looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table.
But on the stroke of half time Onuoha picked up a loose clearance and dribbled through the Chelsea defence before rolling the ball beyond Petr Cech to give the Black Cats the lead.
And just seven minutes after the break they doubled their advantage when a fast flowing attack between Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson was capped with a calm finish from Gyan – cue the dancing.
And just as the travelling Sunderland supporters thought things couldn’t get any better, the Wearsiders capped the performance with a third goal late in the game.
The tireless Kieran Richardson pressured England fullback Ashley Cole into a mistake who put it on a plate for Welbeck to slot home and seal a truly memorable afternoon for those in red and white.
And here at The Sunderland Echo we take a look back at that game 11 years ago and see where those who started the game are at now and what has been of their careers since leaving the Stadium of Light.

5. Nedum Onuoha - retired
Onuoha's dazzling run and finish gave Sunderland the lead at Stamford Bridge on this day 11 years ago. The defender beat several Chelsea players before sliding the ball past Petr Cech to become the first visiting player to score at Stamford Bridge in the 2010-11 season. Richardson will be forever remembered on Wearside for 'that' freekick against rivals Newcastle United but the midfielder gave five years to the Black Cats after arriving from Manchester United in 2007. Richardson made just under 150 appearances in red and white before joining Fulham in 2012 for £2m. Richardson spent two seasons at Craven Cottage before moving to Aston Villa where he also enjoyed two years. Cattermole became an honorary red and white having spent 10 years with the Black Cats since his £6m arrival from Wigan Athletic in 2009. The midfielder made 261 appearances for Sunderland before leaving in 2019 after the club failed to achieve promotion back to the Championship. Zenden arrived at the Stadium of Light late in his career but still provided two good seasons for Sunderland and quickly became a crowd favourite. The midfielder, once of PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Chelsea, Middlesbrough, Liverpool and Marseille, made 50 appearances on Wearside scoring four goals including a wonder strike against Tottenham Hotspur. Zenden was handed the captain's armband in his final match in football against West Ham United which he capped with a goal as Sunderland sealed a 3-0 win over the Irons (Photo by Mike Hewitt/Getty Images) Photo: Mike Hewitt
