The deal was announced in the early hours of deadline day, McGeady having travelled to Charlton to complete his medical and sign terms on his loan move late on Thursday evening.

McGeady, who still has 18-months left on his Sunderland deal, has no future at Sunderland under Phil Parkinson after it was made clear he could leave the club in December.

“Last season we played against them obviously on three occasions and he’s an exceptional player. He brings goals, he brings assists, he’s someone that can make something out of nothing.

“He’s got experience, he’s played in Europe and for his country. We’re bringing in a very good, experienced player.

“Coming into the back end of the season experience can be important, Darren Pratley showed that in the play-off games last season.”

Charlton’s director of football Steve Gallen said: “I’m pleased. He’s someone I’ve been following personally for years watching him play for Ireland and Celtic in particular. We had a good look at him last year because we played against him a few times.

“We wanted to get someone attacking and someone exciting and I’m pleased we got Aiden.”

McGeady will train with his new teammates for the first time on Friday and could make his debut against Barnsley at The Valley on Saturday.
