Sunderland were held to a goalless draw at Charlton as Alex Neil’s side dropped out of the League One play-off places

Alex Neil’s side dominated possession in the first half, with the best chances falling to top scorer Ross Stewart who headed a few efforts just wide.

The visitors kept up their pressure at the start of the second half but couldn’t find a way past goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray.

25’ Another Stewart header

Sunderland’s wing-backs Gooch and Cirkin are taking up advanced positions and getting the better of their Charlton counterparts.

Another cross from Gooch was met by Stewart, who lept above Peace but headed wide from inside the penalty area.

Sunderland won another corner after Gooch’s cross from the right found Cirkin at the back post, forcing MacGillivray into a save.

From the following corner, Pritchard’s in-swinging cross found Stewart who had a free header but steered his effort wide.

Charlton defender Lavelle got away with one challenge on Pritchard near the hosts’ box and has now been booked for a foul near the halfway line.

The home fans felt Pritchard went down too easily and are now booing the Sunderland man.

12’ Stoppage in play

There’s a pause in play after Jaiyesimi went down after a tackle from Cirkin.

Sunderland have seen more of the ball so far, with Charlton looking to spring forward on the counter attack.

It’s been an encouraging start for the Black Cats.

6’ Stewart header saved

Sunderland have started on the front foot and almost took the lead from a corner there.

Pritchard’s in-swinging delivery was met by the head of Stewart but the effort was straight at MacGillivray.

2’ Looks like wing-backs

It looks like Sunderland have started with a back three, with Winchester as the right-sided centre-back and Gooch and Cirkin as the wing-backs.

Pritchard is playing just behind Stewart and Broadhead.
