Reay said: “It was a big loss when Charlotte left to go to Hibernian, and we understood the reasons why she went.

“But now we’re absolutely delighted to bring her back alongside the news of our promotion – we all know the type of player she is and the strengths that she brings to the squad.

“We’re trying to build a competitive squad at this level, and a player like Charlotte fits into exactly that.”

Potts admitted she is “a bit overwhelmed” to be back at Sunderland but is looking forward to the upcoming campaign .

“I can’t wait to get started back in a league where we definitely deserve to be. The ultimate aim is the Super League and that’s what we want to push towards. It sort of feels like fate – it’s great to be back.

“I have a great support network in the North East and I really want to try and keep promoting girls’ football here. It’s important that we have a really good platform for them.”
