Sunderland hung on to claim a 2-1 win at Birmingham City in their final match before the World Cup break.

The Black Cats took a first-half lead when Amad set up Ellis Simms to score in the 25th minute.

Birmingham saw more of the ball but fell further behind when Amad scored an excellent second for the Black Cats, converting in front of the travelling fans.

Substitute Lukas Jutkiewicz then pulled a goal back for Birmingham 12 minutes from time but Sunderland were able to hold on.

Here’s how the game played out:

25’ GOOOAAAAALLLLL!!! SIMMS!!!

That seemed to come from nothing.

Pritchard played the ball to Amad who then produced an excellent piece of skill with three Birmingham players around him.

The Manchester United loanee then released Simms on the right of the box and the striker beat Ruddy with a low finish across goal.

0-1!

Another chance for Sunderland after Clarke was fouled by Mejbri on the edge of the box, resulting in a yellow card for the Birmingham man.

Pritchard then sent a low free-kick just wide of the far post.

35’ Birmingham still dangerous

Birmingham haven’t been afraid to do direct at times, with Deeney and Hogan up top.

The ball broke for Mejbri there before he fed the ball to Bacuna in space on the right.

The latter’s drilled cross hit Hogan in the box before Sunderland cleared the danger.

40’ Big save from Patterson

Sunderland have their goalkeeper to thank.

Batth stepped out of defence and missed a challenge, before Wright lost Hogan who was sent through on goal.

Patterson charged off his line quickly to stop the striker’s effort.

Huggins is booked for clipping Mejbri.

The Birmingham man has been involved in a few tussles so far and is also on a yellow card.
