The Swedish striker, who is currently training with former club IK Sirius in Sweden, has confirmed that he has received offers from other clubs this summer.

However, he insists that he has not closed the door on a return to Sunderland whose offer remains ‘on the table’.

But tellingly, his comments suggest that some other offers may be more financially appealing.

Benji Kimpioka has offered a fresh update on his Sunderland future

“It [Sunderland’s offer] is still relevant,” said Kimpioka, speaking to UNT.

"Their contract proposal is still on the table and it is first and foremost up to me and then my family what I should do.

"There are small things you have as a requirement for your contract. If other clubs offer better deals, you may want Sunderland, which you still like, to match it.

"You ask yourself questions, but as I said, Sunderland is a club that I love very much and we will see.

“There are other alternatives absolutely, but I do not want to go out with anything other than that.”

Kimpioka was absent from Sunderland’s first pre-season friendly against Gateshead on Saturday afternoon, and it looks increasingly unlikely that he will be involved in any capacity with the Black Cats in the coming weeks with contract talks having hit a standstill.

Any club who could agree a deal for Kimpioka would have to pay Sunderland compensation before the transfer could be signed-off, adding an extra complication to any talks with other clubs.

But for now, the Swede says he is not focusing on the long-term – and is instead just trying to retain his fitness with his former club.

"Right now I focus on keeping going and being as fit, strong and ready as possible for what is to come in the future.

"This is what I focus on the most, since where I end up after this period I'm not sure yet.”
