Our Sunderland AFC writers Mark Donnelly and Richard Mennear deliver their verdicts on some of the big talking points:

What would the signing of Luke Garbutt mean for Denver Hume?

MD: Sunderland were always going to bring in a left-sided defender this summer, but many may have predicted that they would be an understudy to academy graduate Denver Hume.

Hume impressed in Parkinson's system and was a key part of the Sunderland squad that enjoyed an upturn in results following the turn of the year.

He has earned his shirt, but will have to battle for his spot in the team should the Black Cats strike a deal for free agent Garbutt.

For the former Everton youngster, who has been one of the best defenders in League One over the last two seasons, will not be content with a place on the bench.

It would be an eye-catching piece of business if Sunderland can get a deal for Garbutt over the line, but questions will then be asked of how his arrival could affect Hume.

It's a reasonable question, but given the condensed nature of the upcoming League One season - with more midweek fixtures expected - could it be a wise move to have two senior, talented left-sided defenders on the books? Or will it be a move that stifles Hume's progression? Only time will tell.

RM: It's a good question and no doubt Phil Parkinson will have a lot to ponder.

Sunderland needed another option at left-wing back with just Denver Hume in that position currently but few would have expected they could bring in a player with the level of quality as Luke Garbutt.

He wouldn't be happy sitting on the bench and would clearly expect to start, what does that mean for Hume's development? After a shaky start last season he was one of the most consistent performers and a big threat down that left side.

Garbutt has interest from elsewhere including the Championship and it is by no means certain Sunderland will sign him but if they do it would be seen as a coup and another signal of intent.

What it means for Hume would be the next big question.

What do you make of the Benji Kimpioka contract situation and which youngsters will shine next season?

MD: Benji Kimpioka was in the headlines once again this week, although little seems to have changed on the contract front with the forward still mulling over an offer from Sunderland.

The Swede is keen on first-team football, but would likely find himself down the pecking order should he put pen to paper on Wearside.

Elliot Embleton and Jack Diamond both look far more prepared for first-team football than Kimpioka - and could convincingly deal with the physical demands of League One on a regular basis.

The duo have both been on loan and have been exposed to senior football - while Kimpioka has not.

If he returns to Sunderland this summer, a loan move should be the first priority for the young forward - for only then can make some concrete strides towards becoming a first-team player.

RM: It's decision time for Kimpioka.

Sunderland have offered him a deal and the club can't wait around forever as they plan for next season.

Kimpioka wants to play first team football, that should be applauded, but is he good enough for a regular starting spot?

That's the big question and there would have to be compromise on both sides should he sign, as he is still developing as a player.

Sunderland will soon need a decision or whether it is best both parties now move on.

In terms of which youngster will shine next season? The 2020-21 campaign will hopefully be the year Elliot Embleton fulfills his potential in a red and white shirt provided he is given the opportunity and steers clear of injury.

A big talent with a big future ahead of him.

What do you make of the business done so far by Sunderland?

MD: Sunderland's business has been the best of any side in League One thus far, and my stance hasn't changed despite some eye-catching deals in the third tier this week.

In Bailey Wright and Aiden O'Brien, Sunderland have attracted two Championship-level players who will certainly improve the squad.

But they can only be the start.

A goalkeeper is needed this summer, while reinforcements at centre back will also be key.

Some extra craft and guile in midfield would not go amiss, while fans will also be keen to see a prolific striker arrive.

Time is on Sunderland's side - with over a month until the League One season begins - and based on the club's business so far, supporters can have every belief that the Black Cats' remaining recruits will be of a high standard.

RM: It has proved a solid start to the window, it was widely expected Bailey Wright would commit to a permanent deal but until it is signed then there will always be some nerves.

Wright is a Championship-standard defender so provided he can avoid injury, he should prove an excellent signing.

Aiden O'Brien is less well-known to Sunderland fans but has played at a level above so should be a welcome addition.

Much more is needed though including another left-back, centre-back, senior goalkeeper and forward options including at least one prolific striker.
