Wright suffered what looked as if it would be a season-ending setback late in the 1-0 win over Oxford United on February 19th.

He was expected to be out for a period of eight to twelve weeks, and in a Q&A session with fans on the club’s official account, he said that his recovery was going well.

“The recovery is going well,” he said.

“The rehab is going on time and to plan.

“Obviously I'm doing all my rehab from home at the moment in what are tough times and circumstances for everyone, but it's all going well and I'm not too far away from full fitness.

“I'm working hard every day and I'm not too far off.”

As it stands, Wright could yet play a part if and when League One action resumes.

Football in the UK is postponed indefinitely as the COVID-19 outbreak escalates, and though the EFL have stressed their determination to finish the current season, it is not yet clear whether that will be feasible.

Wright is also one of a huge number of players in the game whose contract expires at the end of June, further complicating matters.

Both he and manager Phil Parkinson have previously said that they hope to extend the arrangement.

Wright answered a number of questions from supporters, including the highlight of his Sunderland time so far and the best player he’s played again.

“If I had to pick one moment it would be making my debut [at Tranmere], missing an absolute sitter but we won 1-0, kept a clean sheet and it was nice to make my debut in that shirt.”

On his best opponent, he said: “One that stands out when I was 15 or 16 years old, a player who twisted me up, chopped me about ten times in a row, had my legs all over the place and cramping, was Neymar.

“I didn't know how he was then, not many people did, but after that I hoped I'd never have to play against him again.”
