Arthur Masuaku transfer interest emerges as Turkish club Konyaspor eye Sunderland defender – reports

Arthur Masuaku has been linked with a return to Turkey as Konyaspor consider a move for the Sunderland defender

Turkish Super Lig side Konyaspor are reportedly interested in signing Sunderland defender Arthur Masuaku this summer.

Turkish journalist Ertan Süzgün, who reports for Yeni Açık, claims Konyaspor have identified the experienced left-back as a potential transfer target. The 32-year-old joined Sunderland from Beşiktaş last summer, returning to English football after previously representing West Ham United in the Premier League.

The DR Congo international was brought in to add experience and depth on the left side of Régis Le Bris’ squad but struggled to establish himself as a regular. Masuaku subsequently joined French side RC Lens on loan in January, spending the remainder of the 25-26 campaign in Ligue 1. His long-term position on Wearside now appears uncertain as Sunderland continue reshaping their squad ahead of a campaign involving Premier League, Europa League and domestic cup football.

Reinildo Mandava remains among Le Bris’ established options at left-back. At the same time, Aji Alese and Leo Hjelde can also provide cover on that side of the defence as it stands, though whether both can play in the Premier League remains to be seen. Sunderland are expected to consider suitable offers for players unlikely to feature regularly, with outgoing business particularly important under the Premier League and UEFA squad-cost regulations.

Masuaku already has considerable experience of Turkish football after spending several seasons with Beşiktaş before moving to Sunderland. That familiarity with the league could make him an attractive option for Konyaspor as they assess potential defensive additions.
