Xhemajli has signed a two-year deal with Sunderland after impressing Phil Parkinson during a trial at the club.

The Black Cats have paid a six-figure compensation sum to Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax after the 22-year-old’s contract expired earlier this summer.

Cana was a popular figure during his brief stay at the club and was quick to tell the Kosovan international about the passion of the support.

"I had some good talks with the club and the manager,” Xhemajli told safc.com.

“I also spoke to Lorik Cana who told me some good things about the club and the fans, and how amazing the fans are.

“I'm excited to put on the shirt and get out on the field at this amazing stadium, hopefully as soon as possible with the fans.”

Xhemajli will not be part of the squad that faces Hull City in the Carabao Cup on Saturday afternoon, but could make his debut next Tuesday against Aston Villa U21s.

After playing a full part in the conclusion to Xamax’s season, the defender is in good condition and says he is ready for the challenge ahead.

Xhemajli is likely to challenge Tom Flanagan for a place as the left centre back in Parkinson’s 3-4-3 system, but says he will bring a versatility to the defence group.

“I'm a ball-playing defender,” Xhemajli said.

“I give 110% on the field and I'm a fighter.

“I'm used to play on the left side of defence but I can play on the right or in the middle. Wherever the coach lines me up, I'll give my best.

“I'm ready, I'm hungry and we are ready to put the club where it belongs.”

Xhemajli was due to be involved for Kosovo U21s on Friday night as they take on England, before joining up with the senior group for a clash with Greece on Sunday.

That will no longer be the case, but the 22-year-old is hoping that his move will help strengthen his international ambitions through the season.
