The Black Cats dominated possession in the first half but couldn’t find a breakthrough against the compact visitors.
Blackpool posed more of a threat after the interval, especially from set-pieces, yet neither side could find a winning goal.
Sunderland also used all five substitutes and handed a debut to new signing Edouard Michut.
Our Sunderland writer Phil Smith has dished out his player ratings from the match:
13. Dan Neil (sub) - 7
Didn’t get much chance to affect the game going forward but played a really important role in protecting his defence, winning second balls and stopping some dangerous counters. 7 Photo: Martin Swinney
14. Abdoullah Ba (sub) - 6
Looks a real talent but not able to open the game as much as he has in the last couple of games here. 6 Photo: Frank Reid
15. Edouard Michut (sub) - 5
Tidy on the ball on debut and will hope to be more influential when he settles. 5 Photo: Frank Reid
16. Leon Dajaku (sub) - 5
Brought a presence and put himself about but little chance to create much. 5 Photo: Frank Reid
