Phil Parkinson was sensationally sacked as Sunderland manager on Sunday night.

The result followed a drab 1-1 draw away to Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town on Friday, leaving Sunderland eighth in League One and sitting outside of the play-off positions.

And talk has already turned towards who will replace Parkinson at the Stadium of Light, with a host of names from Gus Poyet and Danny Cowley to Kevin Phillips and John O’Shea among the runners and riders.

Speaking on Instagram, Anichebe said: “Finally! Go and get Nigel Pearson and stick with him.”

Interestingly, former Back Cats and Hull City midfielder David Meyler also chimed in, explaining: “Step forward John O’Shea.”

The pair played together with the Republic of Ireland.
