McGeady is the club’s top scorer this season but is no longer part of Phil Parkinson’s first-team plans at the Stadium of Light.

The Sunderland boss says he’s given McGeady and his agent time to find a new club next month and says the decision is in the best for the Black Cats.

Reaction to the news was mixed, with some Sunderland supporters claiming it’s the right decision in terms of dressing room harmony.

Others, though, weren’t impressed by Parkinson’s stance.

Here’s how some fans reacted on social media:

@Dancoat1982: When in form Aiden McGeady is arguably the best player in the league, absolute madness to let him leave. I guess this is another indication of Stewart Donald’s acceptance of our current position.

@PeterJWhalen7: Harmony and togetherness absolutely pivotal to any sides success. If McGeady is causing an atmosphere and unrest among the squad, that will show on a matchday. No one is bigger than the club but I do worry who we will replace him with. Need a young, hungry pacey winger

@bobbyspout: Losing Aiden McGeady when you’re side is struggling for creativity is just ridiculous. Parkinson can’t manage him and his style is causing friction. These problems may have been there before but it’s pushing it to breaking point now. The wrong man is going here

@garyjerry: I think it just confirms the problems in the dressing room with the manager. Not a good sign when this manager is getting rid of a former champions League player - he should be trying to get the best out of him.

@RoGairReport: One of those “don’t let the door hit you on the way out” situations. The bloke is obviously detrimental to team spirit and we play better as a side without him in it. Yes, he’s talented and will probably do good things somewhere else... but we don’t need him.

@andyurwin84: He's a luxury player. Plays well for 15-20mins and does nothing for rest of the game. We need players who can graft for 90+ mins.

@markgibbon_mark: Our best player by far, the goals, the assist and genuine quality. There should only be 1 person leaving before Mcgeady, PP. dinosaur football, don’t blame AM for being disillusioned.

@jxmes123: Hasn’t played well this season but he’s still our best player by a mile

@Darbythedude: I predict another jack Rodwell scenario

@Shaun_Hall23: Just when you think things can’t get any worse #safc strike again
